Hendricks' Flowers: A Family Owned Business
In July of 1937, Clyde Hendricks purchased four greenhouses at the current location in Lititz. The greenhouses had been built in 1914 to produce carnations for the Philadelphia flower market. Clyde primarily grew carnations, but also chrysanthemums and snap dragons. Initially a wholesale operation, Clyde opened a small shop in 1951 and started selling flowers retail. Operations were expanded with the addition of two greenhouses in 1949 and 1958 with a current greenhouse area of just over 33,000 square feet.
Upon Clyde's death in 1996, Robert Hendricks took over command of the greenhouses with his wife Bernice (Bernie) running the retail shop. Their daughter Sue Ellen serves as a floating manager with both horticultural and business expertise, and son John handles the greenhouse crops. In addition there are ten full time and four part time employee most of which work in one aspect or another of retail. There is usually several seasonal employees working in the greenhouses.
About Our Fresh Cut Flower Crops
Hendricks' Flowers presently grows around 70 cut flower crops. The largest being carnations, chrysanthemums, snap dragons, asiatic and oriental lilies, calla lilies, Freesia, lisianthus, tulips, and gerbera daisies.
Growers with greenhouses typically sell to wholesalers. Growing the majority of the flowers that are used in a full service retail shop is extremely unique.
Additionally, Hendricks' purchases all their roses and greens as well as many off season, tropical, and some specialty flowers from wholesalers.
The Hendricks' Fresh Cut Flower Advantage
The advantage to growing flowers rather than buying is primarily a matter of quality. Fresh picked, mature, flowers are simply better in every way than those purchased from wholesalers. They look nicer and last longer. Virtually every type of flower that Hendricks' grows could be purchased, but the effort is made to procure as little as possible from other sources in order to provide the best product possible.
